There aren't many words to accurately describe India. It is a truly unique place with each state presenting a new experience. The sights, smells, and chaos overwhelm the senses with their intensity. My hope is that these photos can help describe India, at least through my eyes. It would be amazing to spend a few months getting to delve deeper into the culture, but I hope you enjoy what I found in a short two week stint around India. Below are a series of images from a government funded all girls boarding school in the Araku Valley of the Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh, India. We visited this school on a Saturday and therefore no teaches were around, but only one caretaker for the entire 400 hundred girls at the school. They did not speak english and it took a while for them not to be scared of us. We ended up teaching them how to play "duck, duck, goose" and a few other games.
I enjoyed getting to know different people in India. Everyone I met had a similar outlook on life regardless of profession, religion, or region. People want to help each other and live a genuinely good simple life. Something I heard from multiple people was that all religions are based on the same principals and that it doesn't matter what you practice so long as you practice those basics everyday.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was deemed a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999. It is mostly used by tourists now, but was built to give easier access to Darjeeling from New Jalpaiguri. The steam engine is used to transport tourists between the station in Darjeeling and Ghum, while diesel engines are used to make the longer trip up almost 1900 meters of elevation from start to finish.
